Table & Chairs Presents: Apparitions

Seattle, WA—New Music record label Table & Chairs is proud to present Apparitions — a Halloween inspired performance that will take place at the historic Columbia City Theater on Thursday, October 24th, 2013 at 8:00pm. The performance will feature cutting-edge Seattle group King Tears Bat Trip—a mind-bending 6-piece ensemble comprised of guitar, saxophone, live-electronics, and three drum sets. The ensemble’s infectious grooves and otherworldly soundscapes are largely inspired by traditional Haitian Vodou music combined with the ferocity of free-improvisation.  Other performers will include the groundbreaking new group Burn List, Portland-based noise outfit Pinkish, and the hive-mind of the Zimmerman/Carns Duo.

About The Performers

King Tears Bat Trip can be a ferocious, power-violent beast, but their catchy song forms and hypnotizing beats have made the music a favorite among the emerging bands of the Northwest DIY scene. The folksy melodies seem as much like Haitian Vodou music as they do an Albert Ayler spirit song. Barking saxophone improvisations shout over Bergman’s washed-out, metallic guitar lines, and twangy, rolling percussion instruments sound in the radius. The band’s tightly-woven rhythmic patterns and careful control of pacing sound both raw and fully assured. King Tears Bat Trip was recorded in unedited, live studio takes, retaining all the energy of their adrenaline-inducing shows.

Burn List, a new collaboration from Seattle’s scorching new music scene features trumpeter Cuong Vu, tenor saxophonist Greg Sinibaldi, keyboardist Aaron Otheim, and drummer Chris Icasiano. Marking the meeting of two distinctive generations of creative new music in Seattle, each member of Burn List have uniquely contributed their musical DNA to the city’s musical lineage. Having been on the forefront of the scene as established veterans, Vu and Sinibaldi each offer unique compositional approaches and styles that have helped shape the newest generation of musicians in Seattle. Icasiano and Otheim are, in part, products of those contributions and they form Burn List’s paired-down rhythm section combination of keyboard and drums pushing to create a new sonic approach to the music and group improvisation. Burn List’s unique interface with improvisation and original compositions draw from wide musical influences ranging from Ligeti to Albert Ayler to Aphex Twin to Meshuggah and many things in between. Siphoned through the band’s collective aesthetics, the music freely crisscrosses genres resulting in a new musical sound that is thoughtful, energetic, current and original.

Pinkish is an experimental jazz ensemble from Portland, Oregon consisting of: Andrew Jones (Upright Bass), Ryan A. Miller (Electric Guitar, Electric 12-string Guitar), Kyle Shipp (Electric Guitar) and Grant Pierce (Drumset).  We formed out of mutual admiration of the improvised medium in 2013. Our sound is the culmination of every member creating an environment where we can feel comfortable singing to one another. Find their website here.

Zimmerman/Carns Duo – The new collaborative duo project of Jacob Zimmerman (alto saxophone) and Gus Carns (piano) features a unique brand of rhythmically complex improvisatory music. Restless yet relaxed; precise yet spacious; chaotic musical structures navigated in a flowing, intuitive way. Contemporary points of reference include the music of Tyshawn Sorey and Henry Threadgill. Founded in 2011, Table & Chairs is an independent record label based in Seattle, Washington, collectively run by a dedicated group of active musicians and artists. Our purpose is to represent and unite artists and listeners who actively contribute to a musically forward-thinking community, wholly devoted to the advancement of New Music.  In addition to promoting and releasing music, Table & Chairs produces concerts and organizes educational outreach programs.

These events include a weekly, curated improvisation session called The Racer Sessions. Each Sunday, a composer presents a piece that is then followed by a free-improvisation session informed by themes from the music that was presented.

Additionally, in conjunction with the local nonprofit organization Seattle JazzED, Table & Chairs hosts showcases and presents clinics on improvisation and jazz for middle school and high school students throughout Seattle.
