Human Instamatic curator Sergio Bessa will lead an exhibition tour and conversation with Julie Ault— founding member of the artists’ collective Group Material (1979–1996) and an enthusiastic follower and friend of Martin Wong’s work since the early 1980s —and Alex Fialho, programs manager at Visual AIDS, an organization dedicated to utilizing art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue and supporting HIV+ artists. Around Town: The Color of Comedy
Museum of the Moving Image

Bronx Museum Color of Comedy Feb 16Saturday, February 6, 1:00 pm. 36-01 35th Ave, Astoria, NY Museum of the Moving Image continues its annual collaboration with the Black Filmmaker Foundation with an afternoon forum on the intersection of race and comedy. The event will feature a screening of Harry Belafonte’s groundbreaking 1967 TV special A Time for Laughter: A Look at Negro Humor in America, followed by a lively discussion with comedians of color, including Joyelle Nicole Johnson, Leighann Lord, Mugga, Freddie Ricks, Alaudin Ullah, Ruperto Vanderpool, Tim Wynn and Mike Yard.

Martin Wong: Human Instamatic

Martin Wong: Human Instamatic is the first museum retrospective of the work of Chinese-American painter Martin Wong (1946-1999) since his untimely death. The exhibition traces Wong’s development as an artist, beginning with his transition from an introspective youth in San Francisco painting haunting self-portraits to his self-identification in the mid-1970s as the “Human Instamatic,” a street artist selling portraits of passersby in Eureka, CA. Trees are Alphabets
On view through February 14, 2016
Trees Are Alphabets considers how the sun, rain, wind, and soil constantly transform the shapes of trees since evolving in primeval forests. McAdams sees in these transformations a vision of an epiphenomenon – like a text – that is forever changing. For the duration of the exhibition, McAdams will write with tree branches, in the hope to make space for a resonant poetic emanation to emerge out of this human-tree collaboration. Read more…
